Similar to public safety (fire, police), public utilities (power, water), and other public infrastructure (roads, sewers), public health is the responsibility of local and state government. Foundational Public Health Services (FPHS) are the basic level of public health services that must exist everywhere for services to work anywhere. One of the ways we accomplish this is through Provider Resources WA, to improve medical provider access to vital public health resources and information, a shared service made possible with an investment from investment from FPHS dollars.
In 2016, Washington State Department of Health awarded Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department seed money to pilot a shared service project: share communicable disease information, resources, and guidelines with partner local health jurisdictions across Washington. Provider Resources WA launched in 2017 and has grown to 10 partner local health jurisdictions since.
